AIDS, Germ Warfare, Anti-Biotic Resistant Disease And The Gospel of Jesus Christ

31 And there shall be men standing in that generation, that shall not pass until they shall see an overflowing scourge; for a desolating sickness shall cover the land.

32 But my disciples shall stand in holy places, and shall not be moved; but among the wicked, men shall lift up their voices and curse God and die. (D&C 45:31-32)

What does this mean?  It is a prophecy in the 45th Section of the Doctrine and Covenants.  And I am not sure what it means.  Some possible interpretations are pretty scary.  Years ago while I was living in Ketchikan, Alaska, I attended a fireside in the Ketchikan Ward meetinghouse and the speaker was Elder Bradford of the Seventy.  After the meeting, I asked him about this scriptural passage and he said it had already been fulfilled by the AIDS epidemic.  I have also thought it might refer to the growing problem of anti-biotic resistant diseases and infections.  Or it might refer to biological weapons of mass destruction used in some future war and perhaps an attack on our nation.  Or possibly “all of the above.”  I have heard others insist it refers to the drug problem in our world, or the pornography problem.

What do you think?  What is this “desolating sickness?”  Is it still ahead?  Has it already happened? What other scriptures could help us understand this one?

I do not find it ironic at all that one would have asked a GA about something he (or even she) had been puzzling about for a while, nor do I find it ironic that the GA would provide an answer. I have little doubt that we are to seek out answers wherever we can, although I would expect that we should first do as our blog owner did and think about for a while (or even a season).

And to provide my own thoughts, I do not feel that AIDS is the desolating sickness spoken about, or at least the only one. Between 50 – 100 million died from the 1918 flu alone. My understanding is that so far, about 30 million have died worldwide since the AIDS epidemic started, and the rate of deaths is dropping, thanks in large part to the US efforts, especially those of Bush 43. I would also expect that Bono has been instrumental in this effort.

But back to D&C 45. I am not at all certain that the desolating scourge is a temporal – physical – one. The most desolating scourge that I can conceive of is the spiritual scourge that is occurring worldwide, has devastated Europe already, and is spreading across the US as I type. The fundamental bases upon which this country was founded, which was safeguarded in the colonies as it was being erased from great Britain, is being exponentially decimated in the US. Belief in core spiritual principles has been diminishing since the end of WW II. The sanctity of life has been thrown out along with the millions of unborn children. The self respect that walks along side of personal responsibility continues on that path, right into the trash. The entitlement mentality has rushed in to replace the loss of self respect. The fear of God has been replaced with the fear of the PC police. Common sense does not deserve that title any more.

So you get the drift here, however subtle I am being. The desolating sickness which fills me with dread, and with fear for the well being of my offspring, becomes more and more apparent with each passing news broadcast.

I find it ironic that one who is seeking truth is willing to ask “the brethren” for the answer to this. You have your own liahona (your heart) and a good set of knees (hopefully).
